Dave King

Dave King has 30 years of coaching and managing experience and a reputation as one of the game’s most respected figures. Dave was named the first head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2000. Prior to joining the Blue Jackets he spent three seasons with the Montreal Canadiens, where he served as an assistant coach from 1997-99 and as Director of European Scouting in 1999-00. Columbus marks King’s second stint as a head coach in the NHL as he guided the Calgary Flames to a pair of division titles. Prior to joining the NHL, King spent nine seasons with the Canadian National Hockey program where he earned a reputation as one of hockey’s brightest teachers and tacticians. His success at the international level is well documented. He coached Canada to the gold medal at the 1982 World Junior Championships and served as an assistant coach with the bronze medal winning Team Canada at the World Championships that same year. The following year, he coached Canada to the bronze medal at the 1983 World Junior Championships and a year later led the Olympic Team to a fourth place finish at the Winter Games in Sarajevo. He enjoyed his greatest Olympic success at the 1992 Games in Albertville, France as he guided his team to the silver medal. King has received numerous awards during his career. In recognition of his contributions to hockey, he received the Order of Canada Award in October 1992 and was inducted into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame in 1995. He and his wife, Linda, have three grown children.
